The Arkansas Razorbacks, ranked 14th in the preseason AP poll, are gearing up for a challenging non-conference schedule. Tests against top-tier teams like Houston, Duke, and Texas Tech await, setting the stage for an intense season.
Senior forward Trevon Brazile, the sole remaining player from the Eric Musselman era, expressed his aspirations for a national championship. "It's a four-year journey for me," he said, "and I want to give our fans something special."
Calipari, a seasoned coach with a 22-14 record in his first year at Arkansas, is taking a different approach this season. "Last year was a rush," Brazile noted. "This time, we're taking our time and scrimmaging more."
Amidst the retirement of coaching legends like Tony Bennett and the passing of the torch to the next generation, Calipari was asked about his longevity. At 66, he believes he'll know when it's time to step down. "If I become transactional, I'll know," he said.
Calipari's son, Brad, is also part of the coaching staff, and the duo aims to "fix some things" for the sake of the next generation of coaches and players.
And this is the part most people miss... Calipari has strong opinions on player transfers. He believes in a one-time transfer without penalty but wants stricter rules to prevent players from becoming "mercenaries."
"I'm not against transfers," he clarified, "but we need to protect these kids."
Arkansas has bolstered its frontcourt with transfers Malique Ewin and Nick Pringle, who will compete with Brazile for starting minutes. Calipari expects a dominant rebounding team this season.
"We can't be a team that doesn't rebound," he emphasized.
